As the temperature rises so does the population of fleas and ticks. For dogs like me and other furry animals, this can cause a lot of aggravation, hair loss, and itchiness. What are some inexpensive ways to effectively repel fleas and ticks? Admittedly, some home remedies work as an alternative to those expensive trips to the vet and shampoos. Let’s look at a few to save you and your pets the frustration of these pests this summer.
Repelling Fleas and Ticks
- Vinegar
Both apple cider and white vinegar have numerous benefits. One of the benefits happens to include repelling those stubborn fleas. Using apple cider vinegar, you can make a drink for your dog or cat. This will cause them to sweat out the vinegar and resist the itchy menace. The recipe is simple and goes by your dog or cat’s weight. For every 40 lbs place one tablespoon of vinegar into one quart of your pets drinking water. This method is also helpful for improving the shine and quality of their fur.
Using white vinegar, you can create a spray by diluting it with water and using it directly on your pets and around your house to repel fleas and ticks. Once you spray the mixture, don’t dry it with a towel, let the air do its job. Once it’s dry, the smell is invisible to humans but the unwanted guests despise it. This will keep fleas and ticks away from your pets and home.
- Brewer’s Yeast For Cats
Cat’s are allergic to garlic. Therefore, it cannot be used in their food. A safe and still effective alternative is brewers yeast. Brewers yeast that is high in sulfur is best for repelling fleas and ticks.
- Organic Soaps
Organic soaps like organic rose or peppermint soap can help to repel fleas and ticks on your pets. Simply switch your regular shampoo out with these and you can have a great smelling pet and be rid of fleas and tick too!
- Lemon Bath
Believe it or not, bathing your pet with lemon can actually help repel fleas and ticks. Just take two cups of water and dilute 1/2 a cup of squeezed lemon juice and add to your soap or shampoo and you have an easy and natural way to protect your pet from fleas and ticks.
These tips and tricks are safe, efficient, and inexpensive methods to deter these pests. These ingredients might already live in your pantry. They can all be used in combination with other treatments. These tips are chemical-free and shouldn’t pose a risk to burns on your pet’s sensitive skin.
