These large geckos can grow to be up to 10 inches long and have triangular shaped heads with large eyes and ears on the side of their heads. They have spiny frills that run down their backs, on their eyelids, and the sides of their heads.
Crested geckos can be seen in a variety of colors, ranging from yellow and orange to blue, brown, and grey. They can also have patterns, either stripes or spots on their body.
The crested gecko in the wild can be found in New Caledonia and are found on the islands there. They are a common pet, and most people will keep them in terrariums if they are domesticated.
They prefer coastal areas with mountains and inland forest. The hot and humid temperatures of the tropical islands are favorable. They like to rest in vegetation close to the forest floor where it’s cooler and have cover from predators.
Crested geckos are omnivores and will eat a variety of prey items from insects to fruits. They will primarily hunt at night, as they are nocturnal animals.
Both Vitamin D3 and calcium are important dietary elements for juvenile crested geckos. If they don’t have enough of these nutrients, they can develop metabolic bone diseases. Crested geckos have evolved to have a sac on the roof of their mouths for calcium storage.
Male crested geckos are aggressive with each other when in contact, so often multiple female geckos mate with one males. The breeding season occurs year round with the exception of November and December, as they are “cooling months” where the geckos do not breed.
Females will lay 2 eggs after 40 days since breeding, and hatch 60-150 days after being laid. The young geckos are independent as soon as they hatch, and the mother does not provide any care to the offspring.
Crested geckos look like they have eyelashes, but really, they are just ridges. They don’t have eyelids, and they lick their eyeballs to keep them clean and it helps them to remove dust particles.
Crested geckos are vocal animals, and sometimes you will hear them making a chirping noise or barking sound that can sound like squeaking.
