LaPerms can reach a height of 6-10 inches and a weight of 8-10 pounds. They have a wedge-like head that has rounded contours, large flared-out ears, and almond-shaped eyes. All colors and patterns are acceptable for LaPerms such as lilac, tabby, ticked, and chocolate.

There are shorthaired and longhaired varieties of LaPerms with the shorthair having more texture.

LaPerm kittens can be born with wavy or straight fur, or even be bald on occasion. Every kitten starts to shed their coat after 2 weeks, so you’ll want to wait and see what the kitten looks like after shedding to get an idea of what its adult coat will look like.

Even though the adult LaPerm’s coat doesn’t shed, they are not considered hypoallergenic as their dander and saliva can still cause allergic reactions.

Originally, LaPerm cats were bred for the first time in a domestic household of the United States in the 1980s. By experimenting with their genetic mutation, many breeders in the United States then began to produce different types of Laperm cat breeds. In 2002 a female Laperm was brought to the Netherlands for the first time and that cat, along with its kittens, acted as the first breeding stock for the United Kingdom.

Today, the United Kingdom forms one of the most important breed centers of the cat. Laperm cats are found in the homes of many in countries like Germany, Sweden, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Netherlands, and more.

All domestic cats are carnivores, which means they need diets high in protein. Dry cat food is good because it will help LaPerms have healthier gums and teeth; however, wet food provides more moisture to their diet. Look for a cat food with protein, amino acids, and taurine. A diet high in carbohydrates not only causes obesity in cats but it can also lead to diabetes, which is why giving dog food to cats is not recommended.

Felines go through multiple estrous cycles known as heat cycles. Heat cycles in female cats are periods of time when they are capable of breeding and becoming pregnant. They are induced ovulators, which means they ovulate during the time of breeding. After going through a gestation period of two months they produce multiple kittens. LaPerm kittens generally take about 2-3 years to reach physical maturity, with female cats maturing slightly slower.

The LaPerm is a domestic cat that was first introduced in the 1980s. Linda and Richard Koehl from Oregon had a litter of kittens with one runt having an odd curly coat, which they named Curly. Over 10 years of breeding, they introduced the LaPerm as an official breed, named for their curly hair with all descendants being from Curly.
