We all need to get out of the house from time to time, but you don’t always know what to do or where to go. It’s especially difficult if you’re new to the area and overwhelmed by everything going on around you, but this time I’ve got you covered! Below I have compiled a list of five outdoor activities you have to give a go if you’re in the Jacksonville area.
1. Surfing
Whether you are an experienced surfer or you’re completely new to the sport, you can have a fantastic day in the water either way. Let’s start off with some of the best beaches for surfing in Jacksonville then I’ll discuss surfing lessons that could get you out in the waves and shredding in no time! First up is Jacksonville Beach Pier. A very popular spot for surfers and known for consistent surf year round, this is a great option if you don’t mind crowds on sunny days.
Another great option, especially for beginners, is Atlantic Beach. With a long shoreline and fairly tame waves, you have plenty of space to relax and do your thing. Thirdly we have Huguenot Memorial Park. Known for larger waves and rougher surf, this spot is ideal for more experienced surfers.
If you’re trying surfing for the first time and want lessons, there are companies offering them all along the coast of Jacksonville. Two great options are Thompson Surf School that teaches lessons at Jacksonville Beach and Jacksonville Surf and Paddle School at Neptune Beach.
2. Kayaking Tours and Rentals
Why not take an adventure into the rivers and marshes around Jacksonville and get in some great exercise at the same time? Kayaking tours or rentals let you get up close and personal with the diverse wildlife Florida’s waterways have to offer, without causing any damage to the ecosystem. No experience is needed to enjoy a day out on the water, and since most places offer both single and double kayaks you don’t have to leave the kids behind.
Prices vary and there are many options out there, but you can expect to pay $50-75 per person for a 2-3 hour guided tour, and around $15/hour when renting. Check out Groupon to find deals on trips. If a relaxing afternoon on the water sightseeing and wildlife spotting intrigues you, I highly recommend you give kayaking in Jacksonville a try.
3. Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens
The Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is a wonderful place to not only experience the beauty of nature but also learn along the way. The 120 acre plot of land suffered a lot of abuse before the idea of an arboretum was pitched to the City in 2004 (officially opened in 2008). Since the 1940’s the land was used for strip mining and later illegal dumping, but luckily for us it is now maintained by volunteers who continuously add to its biodiversity and maintain its usability for the public. Here is a link to their photo gallery.
With seven trails snaking through the gardens and stretching three miles, there is plenty to explore. The arboretum also features a lake and many of the plants are labeled, giving you the opportunity to enhance your botanical knowledge if you feel inclined. If you’re looking for a peaceful way to start your morning or end your day, I would suggest a leisurely stroll through these beautiful gardens.
4. Fishing Charters
While not everyone’s cup of tea, I figured that fishing charters should be included on this list due to their popularity in Jacksonville. The coastal waters are brimming with everything from Mackerel and Barracuda to Blackfin Tuna and Marlin Blue (swordfish). Here is a species directory if you’re interested. Whether you’re an avid fisherman or are wanting to give it a crack for the first time, you’re bound to have an exhilarating day on the water.
You can find charters all along the coastline, and can select the perfect one depending on what you are hoping to catch. Trips are generally offered as full, half, or ¾ days, ranging from 4-8 hours on the water (some can be extended to 12 hours). Fishing charters will be on the pricier side; you should expect to pay about $100/hour. Despite this fact, for someone with a passion for fishing a day off the coast of Florida is hard to pass up!
5. Little Talbot Island State Park
Little Talbot Island State Park is basically an outdoor enthusiasts paradise. The park website (which is linked in the previous sentence) has a list detailing all of the activities and amenities offered on the island. There is something for every nature lover, from camping and mountain biking to fishing and swimming. The island boasts sandy beaches with rolling dunes, and further inland marshlands surrounded by dense forests.
Birding is quite popular on the island due to the dozens of species of shorebirds that call its beaches home, and inland you might get lucky and catch sight of armadillos, gopher tortoises, or a bobcat. For a unique view of the park, consider renting with or booking a tour through Kayak Amelia. However you choose to experience Little Talbot Island, I’m sure it will turn into quite the adventure!
I hope that this list inspires some of you to go out and experience nature in Jacksonville. Maybe you are searching for a new passion or simply a fun afternoon with friends and family, but either way you can’t go wrong with one of these adventures!
